Commonwealth Carer Respite Centres are located in metropolitan, rural and remote areas across Australia. They can help to arrange respite care when you need a break from caring. Respite might be for part of the day or for longer. The Commonwealth Respite Centre can also arrange 24 hour emergency respite cover.

Except for emergency situations, a person must first be assessed by an Aged Care Assessment Team before entering into respite care. In most cases a person can have up to 63 days of respite care a financial year. However, if the Aged Care Assessment Team deems it necessary, extensions of up to 21 days at a time are possible.
