Cardiovascular disease is widespread. There are many ways its effects can be reduced or prevented. Cardiovascular disease includes:

  • coronary heart disease
  • stroke
  • heart failure, and
  • peripheral vascular disease.

These diseases are mainly caused by a damaged blood supply to the heart, brain and legs. If you are a smoker, overweight, have high blood pressure or are physically inactive you are at much greater risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Talk to your medical practitioner about having regular medical check-ups and reducing your risk of developing these diseases. Further information is available from the Heart Foundation of Australia.
