The New Enterprise Incentive Scheme is a self-employment program that assists you to become self-supporting and independent of Centrelink payments by establishing your own commercially viable business.

To be eligible you must be registered with Centrelink for work and have not reached Age Pension age. Your proposed business must also be assessed as being commercially viable. Places are limited.

If you are accepted you will receive:

  • training in small business management, business skills and business plan development
  • income maintenance for up to 52 weeks, and
  • business advice and mentor support during your first year of business operation.

The Self Employment Development Scheme allows you to undertake market research or to develop business ideas that could lead to the establishment of a viable business.

Participation in this scheme is generally for a period of three to six months, but may be approved for up to 12 months.

To be eligible you must have been unemployed and receiving Newstart Allowance for six months or more.
