The Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) is the Australian Government authority responsible for the enforcement and regulation of company and financial services laws. They are the Government "watchdog" created to protect consumers, creditors and investors.
Their Financial Services Homepage provides access to a database of the current licensed financial services providers and representatives as well as useful information relating to finance and safety against scam and fraud.
