Question & Answer

We are discussing The Self Management of Arthritis
With Graeme Rossiter, Elizabeth Scrivener and Sally Ranford

Question:
What things is the Government doing in relation to self-management?

Answer:
Graeme - The Australian Government’s $36.2 million (1999-07) Sharing Health Care Initiative (SHCI) tested, through a series of demonstration projects, a range of chronic condition self-management models that could be suitable for embedding within the Australian health care system. Supporting the demonstration projects are a range of education and training materials for consumers and health providers and a national evaluation.

Australia is recognised as being at the forefront of self management research. In addition, a range of self management interventions are already available in the acute and community sectors at the local and regional levels.

These are being implemented through State and Territory health authorities and non government chronic disease organisations. Australian private health insurance groups are also involved in self management research and implementation and are increasingly encouraging members to participate in self management programs on the basis of achieving better patient outcomes.
