With Graeme Rossiter, Elizabeth Scrivener and Sally Ranford

Question:
Do Shark Cartilage Tablets help in the relief of Ostoarthritis?

Answer:
Elizabeth - There is absolutely no evidence that Shark Cartilage Tablets help relieve the symptoms of osteoarthritis. You may have seen an article on shark cartilage in relation to a cure for cancer. A helpful article can be found on the ABC website at:

http://www.abc.net.au/science/k2/moments/s1410188.htm

Some people do get confused with shark cartilage and a product derived from the hard skeletons or shells of crabs, lobsters or shrimp called glucosamine. In double-blind placebo controlled trials of glucosamine it has been established that it controls symptoms of knee osteoarthritis better than a placebo, and there is evidence suggestive of a possible cartilage protective effect.

Chondroitin is another product that has also been found in clinical trials to demonstrate a reduced loss of joint space and symptom improvement.

Pharmacies and health food stores do carry a product which combines these two agents. If you would like further information on complementary therapies for osteoarthritis, contact the Arthritis Foundation in your capital city on 1800 011 041 or speak with your local pharmacist or health professional.
