The Age Discrimination Act 2004 commenced on 23 June 2004. The Act prohibits age discrimination in many areas of public life, including:

  • employment
  • access to goods, services and facilities
  • access to premises
  • administration of Commonwealth laws and programs
  • education and Accommodation
  • the transfer of land and requests for information.

The exemptions under the Act include exemptions for superannuation, insurance and credit; pensions, allowances and benefits; and acts done in compliance with particular laws, awards and agreements. Schedule 1 of the Act lists particular Acts and Regulations which are exempt from the Act. The Act applies throughout Australia.

A copy of the Act is available from the Australasian Legal Information Institute.
