So that superannuation savings are used for your retirement and not for other reasons, rules have been established to ensure that super is kept for this purpose. You can only access your superannuation once you have reached the minimum age set by law and have permanently retired from the workforce, unless there are exceptional circumstances. This minimum age, which is 55 if you were born before June 1960, is known as your 'preservation age'.
